# Wolf range hood not working

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Take the baffle filters out and put them through the dishwasher. A hood pulling through greased filters works harder for less air and sounds exactly like a motor on its way out.

### The shortest list on the site

Motor, capacitor, lamps, filters, damper, ducting, and whether the hood is still paired with the cooktop. That is genuinely all of it, and we would rather publish a short list with low figures than pad it out to look thorough.

### What the salt does

A hood is the one appliance in the kitchen with a permanent opening to the outside. Within a few blocks of the ocean, dampers seize, external blower housings corrode and roof-mounted units age years ahead of schedule. Looking at the damper once a year here is worth doing even when nothing is wrong.

Greased filters

The commonest cause of "it does not pull any more", and it is free to fix.

The capacitor

A hood that hums and will not turn. A fraction of the price of a motor and it is tested rather than assumed.

On a remote blower it may be in the roof or on an outside wall rather than over the cooktop, and locating it is part of the visit.

A damper that has corroded shut

Within sight of the water this is common, and it makes a healthy-sounding hood useless.

The speed control

One speed available and not the others. The control rather than the motor.

Wash the filters

Dishwasher, hottest cycle. Then judge the airflow again.

Hold a tissue to the intake

It should hold itself there. If it falls, nothing is moving whatever the noise says.

Try every speed

One working speed is a control problem; none is a motor or a capacitor.

Find the blower

In the hood, in the roof, or on an outside wall. Knowing before we arrive saves an hour.

Filters first, and they are free

What it usually means

Lights work, fan does nothing

Only one speed available

Running, but pulling nothing
